nope, my 92 300E has the door subs as well. It comes with the aktiv bass package on the becker system. I think it became standard fare some time around 1992. As far as I know, mercedes also offered some type of "upgraded" system that had a few more speakers, because my car manual refers to the aktiv bass system being only on 300E 2.6s and the regular 300s having a multi speakers system. As far as I can tell, the manul lied however...
