92 w124 sound systems

Here is some information that I have gleened from various sources. In 1992, the w124 came with two sound system possibilities...the Active Bass system (don't know what aktiv is) which had a single amp that amplified subwoffers mounted in the doors, or the full Sound System that offered two seperate amps that fed all ten speakers. The full Sound System can be verified two ways...look at the speakers on the rear deck...do they have a large alligator eye that seems to extend upward out of the grill...if so, that indicates that there are two vertically mounted tweeters attached onto the woofer and you have a full Sound System. You can also check at the trunk mounted receiver...if you have two speaker jacks plugged into the left and right speaker output jacks that are located under the 4 pin power input plug...you have an Active Bass System. If you have a little box attached to the left bottom side with a three pin connector plugged into it...you have the full Sound System. By the way, the Sound System Adapter that attaches to the receiver on the full Sound System DOES NOT reduce the signal output of the receiver, however it alters the sound curve and extends the bass response.

The w124 has, in the least, 2 dash speakers (4" / 101mm) and 2 rear deck speakers which are 5.25". On W124 series cars with the full Sound System the rear deck speakers are upgraded to a 5.25" component speaker with 2 external dome tweeters, they add 2 (mini) subwoofers in each door, external power amps, and both dash speakers are ugraded to coaxials.

The full Sound System is option number 810. The Active Bass system is option number 814.
