I convinced a CA member to send me some out of a yard out there, and did exactly this, painted and sealed them.
I also spaced out the bracket further from the bumper, It looked no different, but I got it 1/4 an inch away from the fender with some rubber spacers to hopefully stop the chronic rust right there.
