What do you mean when you say "stall"? The 98 SL has the 722.6 electric/hydraulic transmission and is a breeze to fix. Unless it literally blew up there's no reason why it can't be re-built. Any transmission re-builder who's ever done one would agree that it's one of the easiest jobs there is. Don't forget the possibility that the problem could be electrical. The transmission has it's own control unit and they've been known to cause problems. I've also seen cases where the ATF actually "wicks" up the wiring harness and causes damage to both the harness and the ECU. Before you start swapping things around you should probably find out exactly what the problem is. You might be surprised how simple the solution is.
