I have had Poulan "Wild Thing"s (model 2375) from that era and IIRC the oiler runs off a worm geared drive that is behind the clutch. I had to replace one after about 5 years of use. They get subjected to a lot of dirt in that area and it's easy to see why they don't last.

My "Wild Thing" really worked hard for me for 10 years and it finally just wouldn't start anymore (compression most likely). I already had about 20 chains ( some guy was selling them for $4) and I bought what I thought was a new model of the same "Wild Thing"- but they switched the chain gauge on me rendering my collection useless. That Poulan didn't last- then I bought a Homelite and that didn't work well.

Finally, I found a guy who swapped me two classic 2375 "Wild Things" for my Homelite and a bunch of other junky chainsaws so now I can finally use all my NOS chains
