'72 250C auto transmission teach me

Okay, W114, straight six with auto transmission; runs and drives;
1. When first starting reverse is real slow moving, when in drive or any of the lower gears in the beginning of a drive it is slow and straining and then gets better after about a mile or so where it shifts more smoothly.
2. There is a noise like a fan blade hitting metal that is there when initially in gear but it too goes away; I am thinking that is the torque converter, perhaps something loose?
3. If I end up needing to pull it is there a swap to a manual that can be done? I know on the '68 Volvo 122S I have a T5 ford fits nicely.

I have changed the fluid and filter. I have not done transmission work before so I suppose it is time to learn. I appreciate any thoughts, point me in the right direction to learn. Thank you, David
