Upullit type yards sell transmissions for under $100. There are transmission guys who cruise the yards and grab good transmissions. Call a few yards and ask if they can put you in touch with such a person. You may get a good tranny for a couple hundred bucks, maybe not. The same guy may install it for you.

That said, I wouldn't go near a 300K mile NYC car or NJ car.
