Entry level salary in my district is under 30K. New teachers have to immediately go back to school, unless they already have a master's degree, which is rare. With graduate credit courses going for 300 dollars per credit hour and the first few summers of employment dedicated to going back to school, it works out to less than minimum wage. Something needs to change. I personally lost a number of good teachers to the private sector over the years. One young guy I worked with for a few years got let go in last year's reduction in force, and he's now working in Las Vegas as a waiter. He has a guaranteed salary of 40K a year and makes a hundred or more a night in cash tips, plus benefits. A dish donkey is worth more than someone who can teach a child to read? Uh huh.
