Considering the high replacement cost, see if there is a vinyl/furniture repair place in town. I bought a small kit, did a small repair acceptably, but not great, and I believe that with practice and some artistic skill, it can be done. Maybe they can do the repair and you can do the dyeing. Unless it's an "easy" color that can be mixed from the vinyl repair powders, dye/paint will be needed.
I have read on other forums that professionals can perform miracles on dashes and vinyl/leather.
