cant really compare the old mercedes to the new ones. The market of today is cut throat so mercedes cant spend the money on development like they did on the old ones and still make a profit. When you got many car manufactures competiting such as lexus, infiniti,bmw competiting for the luxury car buyer, somewhere something is gonna get compromised.

Every brand has their own set of problems, whether its whoever makes their parts, service department and bugs with the cars. I have worked in enough shops to know this. IF there was a perfect car there would be no need for a service department.
