'65 190D Column Shift Problem

I acquired my father's 65 190D when he fell ill with dementia. It has a 4 speed manual shift on the column. I have repaired the clutch slave and master and got the car going. It shifted fine with a fair amount of slop in the mechanism. One day, it moved forward when I attempted to shift into reverse. It is as if when pulling back the lever, whatever puts it in line to select reverse is not happening. Does anyone know of a good source for a repair manual that would show how to repair this - or an idea of what I might do to troubleshoot?

I've laid down under the car and watched it work and it is not at all clear how it all functions. The levers on the back of the transmission seem to be moving, but there also seems to be quite a bit of play in the mechanism at the base of the steering column - most of which is hidden from view.

Any idea how to remove the steering column and how difficult that is?

Thanks, Dave
