I bought an after-market replacement for the carbon filter in our '96 E300D (W210, OM606NA), which looked to be the original . The replacement was very light in weight compared to the original, apparently containing much less carbon. My wife complained that it didn't work, either, so I returned it and went back to the original, which I had fortunately retained. End of complaints. It would seem that the carbon filter lasts for a good long time.
