We are just not thinking of the right soloutions. Why X ray, Search Bags, etc? Just subject each passenger and bag to a device that would cause any explosive device to detonate. This is a win, win for everyone. Can you imagine being in a terminal, you hear a muffled explosion and then the intercom announces there are seats available on flight XXXX.
