I just took a look at my 85 300D, and it looks like one side of the gromett is wider than the other side.
I replaced mine a few years ago and don`t remember exactly how it did it. but looking at it, I must have used some of that spray sillicone, and slipped it over the top of the tube, and then worked it onto the bracket. I had the engine out when I did it, I do remember that.

Looks like the lower side of the gromett is the narrow side so it can be worked between the tube and bracket.

Hope this helps.

I just checked the 240 and it has the same bracket/gromett. that gromett looks to be of the same size top and bottom.

If the gromett is put on the tube, and the bracket removed, is there enough room to fit the rubber through the opening of the bracket?

I don`t have a spare bracket to look at.
