Question Aux fan resistor- '87 300sdl

My aux radiator fan isn't working on low w/ the A/C on. With other MBs I've always been able to short the wires at the reciever/dryer and the fan will come on low, and in fact I have at times left these wires together for the summer, just to get extra cooling in traffic.

On this car ('87 300sdl) when I short those two wires together, I hear the relay click, but no fan. I checked for current at the fan, there is none, even after the relay clicks. Fuse is fine.

I'm thinking I may have a bad aux. fan resistor for the low speed. Postings on the forum say that the resistor is located under the brake master cyl, or behind the LH headlight. I can't find the resistor. I know what they look like from the PP parts look-up. I can't find anything that looks remotely similar, and in fact there's nothing behind the false firewall, under the master cylinder.

Any idea where to look? Was '87 an odd year, maybe they put it somewhere else? As always, I appreciate your thoughts! Thanks!
