Long ago special pliers were invented for rebuilding water pumps and they were called, not surprisingly, "Water Pump Pliers." These tongue-and-groove pliers made the name "Channel-lock" very well known.

Of course, that was back in the days of the straight-8 Buick/Pontiac and the Flathead Fords, when you could buy a rebuild kit for these 20-lb. blocks of cast iron, probably for under a buck.

It's not like that anymore.
