Well, actually both. The term used for this type of device is "bucket". The term "lifter" is used mainly for a pushrod engine. The term "cam follower" is also used for MB engines. The 617 uses cam followers, but sometimes called "rocker arms". Most all OHC engines (US, Europe, Japan) nowadays (and for years) use buckets (hydraulic or shim). I believe (please correct me if I am wrong) that from at least 1984 till the present, all MB engines are designed with this system (cam directly over the valve using a hydraulic bucket).
