I can't imagine what Toyota's engineers must have been thinking when they designed that 6VZE engine...the head gasket failure always occurs in the same place and you can look at it and tell that there is more span between two of the head bolts in that location. They specify retorquing the bolts after 10-20k miles as well but that entails pulling the cams out to access some of the bolts.

There is no such thing as a 6VZE. You are probably talking about the 3.0 or 3VZ-FE. Commonly referred to as the 3.slow. Certainly not the best motor Toyota has ever built. They replace it with the 3.4 or 5VZ-FE, which is proving to be an excellent motor, arguably even better than the 22RE. I suspect the 500K 4 runners are 4 bangers or 3.4 v6's. The ones you see with blown motors are likely the 3.0's.
