If the rodbender issue was resolved by Mercedes early in the cars life then this engine is bulletproof for a long time?

In the absence of good records, is there a way to tell?
You can find out from Mercedes by VIN# if the work was done. If you happen to know the Dealer that did the work it will be on their server. Lastly, Maintenance records are everything when buying any diesel. 2 other issues, stay away from mostly city driven 350's, these are one of the all time great open road cars. Lastly, these engines need full synthetic oil for as far back as you can determine. Low sulfur diesel fuel allows extended OCI with good synthetic oil.
