yes, it does help with the transmission on my car too. You could also get a stick-on heating pad and stick it onto the transmission instead of the oil pan. I had one on the oil pan on my old motor, since there was not a block heater and it was too hard to put one in. The pads come in several sizes, stick on well, and come with a tube of silicone sealant to seal the edges so it won't get oily and start to come off. I got one for about $40. I can't remember who makes them, only that they come from a place in Wisconsin. I just googled engine block heater to find them.
