Tranny hunting for fourth gear and other issues.

I have been searching K1 and K2 and B2 piston threads and haven't found what I'm looking for. My son's (new to us) 86 300SDL has the following shift problems: Under hard acceleration (kick down engaged) the 1>2 shift is ok, the 2>3 won't take place unless I left off slightly on the accelerator, and the 3>4 shift it "hunts" for 4th. When I say hunts I mean the RPM's vary up and down with no change in the accelerator position. It eventually shifts but usually I need to left off some for it to shift. I have also noticed some stacking (double shifting) of the 2>3 or 3>4 shifts (can't remember which) under slow acceleration.

My question is, will a superior shift kit help this situation? Or am I looking at a different problem entirely? I don't have a flaring issue, the shifts are reasonably firm and (other than when "hunting") occur at the appropriate RPM. Both bowden cable and modulator seem to be adjusted properly.

A wild guess is 250K on the tranny, the fluid level is correct, but don't know when the last service was done. Planning one this week with Dexron III.

Any input is appreciated.
