The 300D doesn't have the idle speed adjuster like the 4 cylinders do. I'm glad you told David to check the instrument light dimmer adjustment. I didn't think to tell him to try it first, although I can't imagine anyone having it at any setting besides max because the lights are so dim to start with. But, it is possible that someone fiddled with it with the lights off wondering what it did.
