My 2 126's, 85 300SD and 82 500 euro SEC, physically release the odo gears from the speedo drive gear when the rest button is pushed ... ergo, pushing the odo reset under any circumstances like driving, coasting, reverseing, talking on the cell phone, etc will not cause the odo gears to break. This is an old tale repeated by people who do not have a clue about how the speedo/odo works.
The gears are relatively easy to replace, provided you have some DIY ability, and available as other posters have stated. Do a search if you don't know how to remove the instrument cluster with a bent coat hanger and then access the gears with a couple of screw drivers.
