Couple of comments:
Synthetic oil increases starting rpm's significantly in very cold weather.
Retrofit pencil glow plugs significantly improve cold weather starting.
You have gasser habits when it comes to starting in cold weather. You should not attempt multiple different starts on a 617 or 616. Your mindset should be that once the key is turned to the start position, it stays in that position until the battery is dead or the engine starts. The first starting attempt is always better than subsequent attempts, hence that rule. If the engine starts running on one cylinder, keep the starter engaged until enough other cylinders kick in to keep it running.
