Hmmm I can't imagine why an old SDL would smell any worse than a w123, especially a wagon. Was the PO a smoker? Or a chronic drive-thru diner (scraps of old food moldering under the seats)?
A carpet shampoo and leather treatment later, possibly your SO will feel more positive about it?
