Back in day when you had the old Edison base fuses in the house fuse box, you could put a 100 W buib in for a fault finder. I wonder if Edison himself thought of that possibility and designed the system such that a bulb could be installed in place of a fuse.
The house I was raised in had screw-in fuses. Four fuses for the entire house!
