It's usually pretty easy to find the cracks or tears in the diaphragms just by looking at them. But if you test each side with a mity vac you'll know which ones need to be replaced. Often with the the mity vac if only one of the diaphragms is leaking on one side, the leaky one won't suck down but the good one will. I always snag these out of the junk yards, you can get piles of them for cheap.
Good write up. I can't tell you how many door lock actuators I've had to repair or replace over the years with my 123s.
