S is for standard, not sport. The system defaults to S mode, economy is selected by applying vacuum to the red line that goes to the transmission. Common fault is the switch itself.
The only reason I can think of removing parts is to stop the delayed cold start upshift 'feature' which is intended to promote rapid heating of the catalytic convertor but causes rough shifting when cold. This uses green vacuum lines. Could it be that the wrong system has been removed?
