You are right. After all our posts over the years we do not have any solid indications of how the oil useage profile is. Unless it has been previously reported and I missed it. Even on the 616 and 617 engines.

Usually when oil viscosity is upped. There is a reduction in consumption. A lot of oil burning snake oils to reduce oil burning are just viscosity increasers. A 15-40 oil is supposed to give you the same protection as a straight 40 weight. They well may but at the same time have a lesser viscosity at operational temperatures. Some quality 15-40 multigrade weight oils on the otherhand may approach a straight 40 oil in viscosity. Or even surpass it perhaps.
