I was intrigued by her recollection that after she fired the guy said "I'm sorry, ma'am. I'm leaving. Please don't shoot."

The "ma'am" seems strangely out of place.

I'm glad, however, that she didn't hit him and maim him. Like as not he would have sued, and probably recovered from her insurance.
