Don't know about your first problem. However, your second problem is more than likely the potentiometer switch . A lot of times you can fix them by turning them rapidly from left to right, spinning it between two fingers, upwards of 50+ times. The spinning can break through corrosion if it's the problem. If that doesn't work, you can either replace the pot., or permanently jump the connection, the latter of the two eliminating any brightness adjustments. Try the spinning, worked on my Jeep (which still has to be wiggled every now and then)
