Thanks to everyone for the replys. I have a lot of things to check.

I did try the same thing as one of the previous posters: Kept the engine just above 1000 rpm while coming to a stop and held it there until the stop light turned green. No smoke. No cloud of smoke when pulling away from the stop light.
