After I fixed the wiring and bulbs, I unplugged the speed sensor in front of the battery, drove the car down the drive and the ABS light came on as it should. And the SRS light cycles on and off as it should.

I'll shortly find out if there is continuous malfunction with the ABS system ... maybe that is why the bulb was removed.
