This is the Lift Pump off of My Car. The 5mm O-ring at the back of the Red Arrow can wear and some Members claimed caused Oil to get sucked into the Lift Pump.
Your Lift Pump may have a simple Rod with a fat end on it instead of the Roller Tappet.

If Oil is mixing with your Diesel Fuel it is going to make the Diesel Fuel in your Fuel Tank look a little grayish in color due to the soot in the Oil.

All of the responses so far are possible causes. But, from the amount of smoke if not a Diaphragm Vacuum Pump the Valve Stem Seals sounds reasonable.
