I don't like giving up My information either but I do that every time I buy something on the Internet.
So in the above case you give up your information but don't have to pay for the download (I guess as I have never tried this); so it is the same as you buying something on the Internet but it does not cost anything.
Apparently if you sign up for the Free Manual access on Mercedes Startek you also end up giving up your credit card information.
Likely the info is used to send you a bunch of Email Ads so get a generic Yahoo, Hotmail, Google, and so one Email.
In short you risk using your Credit Card when you buy something you want or need and that is no different than the risk you would take getting something for free.
