I think he did a good job of making sure he doesn't exclude gun people - based on his request (politely asking) people to not bring guns into a store, any reasonable person would not take exception. From what I understood, his request is specifically for open carry - not concealed carry.
Its the hard core gun people that will get offended because they want to make a political statement. And if they do boycott Starbucks, then Schultz has achieved his goal, for those people typically don't understand compromise and don't belong in a family setting anyway.
