As is usually the case, the article overlooks the resale value when calculating the payback time, which will be significant if it turns out to be a good platform. The $5900 Cummins option in my 2003 Dodge returns $6200 at resale according to KBB.com. The statement that it is much more refined and quiet than the Cummins in the HD is also bogus- new engines are so quiet you don't even know they're running.
