I was a medic in Richmond VA. We once responded to a "check the welfare" call originated from a family member out of state.

On arrival, we found three weeks of newspapers on the front porch and you could smell the funk of death. There were what sounded like two dogs barking inside the house. We gained entry with the help of the Fire Department and found the homeowner dead in her bedroom. The two small mongrel dogs were certainly glad to see us but .... they had eaten her right leg down to the bone and her head was off her body and on the floor with her face eaten off.

Animal Control took the dogs. You don't have to be a big fierce dog to eat someone, you only have to be hungry enough.

My partner said that the first thing he did when he got home that night was feed his dog.
