Grime is not an issue as far as I am aware. It's a sealed system so there are no holes or anything where contaminates can access the fluid.

If you run it dry I think you can damage it. It has metal parts that rub against each other. With no hydraulic fluid to lubricate it I would think it could cause friction and wear that would damage the pump.
