He didn't get away with anything. The trial court exhaustively went over every single detail of the shooting. The jury (whom I might say, seemed to be more intelligent than most of those posting here) used their power and intellect to ask questions of the judge when unsure about the facts and the law. The jury rendered the correct verdict given the facts and the law.
Now, you don't like it, I recommend you move to Florida so you can do everything in your power to get the laws changed to suit you.
