I've heard the vacuum plumbing varied with the year or model. I had an '82 automatic 240D and when I was working on the alternator, I accidentally switched the two EGR vacuum lines at the solenoid-valve on the right inner-fender. The tranny wouldn't upshift until I switched the lines back.
Now, I have the same model with a stick-shift, so I guess I could toss all the EGR plumbing without a care (Unless some zealous EPA official is reading this!)

Happy Motoring, Mark
