people who do not understand car culture are often curious. Easy answer is ask them what they have for a hobby, and tell them that tinkering with your old car is a hobby for you. If nothing else it teaches patience, discipline, and problem solving skills diagnosing a machine, all useful in other parts of life.

Ask him if sitting in front of the TV watching reality tv with his hand down his pants and his finger up his nose teaches the same life lessons.
