This sounds typical, the HVAC guy is trying to make a buck of an ignorant customer.

The circuit board should be around $100, removal and replacement maybe another $100, if its an emergency repair at 3am on a Sunday expect to pay more.

Replacing the furnace should be his cost around $2,500 all in, so he is looking to make a quick $5k at least if not a bit more.

This is why good HVAC guys have a ton of money.
