Lightbulb Mercedes' Alabama plant gets Happy with start of new C-Class production

Filed under: Sedan, Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, Plants/Manufacturing, Videos, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury

Mercedes-Benz first announced plans start building the C-Class at its Alabama factory back in 2009. It's taken a few years to get everything ready, but the first one finally rolled off the line on Wednesday. The milestone gave workers there enough reasons to be happy that they just couldn't help cranking up some Pharrell and dancing. Alabama governor Robert Bentley was at the plant to watch the first sedan be completed and uploaded this video of the celebration, as did local news outlet AL.com.

It seems that just about everybody has a reason to be happy at the Tuscaloosa factory at the moment. Mercedes gets to shield itself from European currency fluctuations to sell one of its top models in North America, and there are about 1,000 new workers at the plant to support building the sedan and pay taxes. Things are going so well there that the place may get a big upgrade in capacity in the near future to assemble even more vehicles. The plant is widely expected to host production for the forthcoming crossover 'coupe' derived from the M-Class utility, a model tentatively known as MLC.
