Trans fluid is cooled by

a liquid to liquid heat exchanger in the radiator tank (note the tubes and hoses running from the trans to the bottom of the radiator); sometimes the heat exchanger cracks (or rots through, if bad coolant flushing habits are part of the car's history) and the result is an exchange of fluids rather than just an exchange of heat. This is disasterous for transmissions.
