These days you can get really nice small speakers that in a car would probably sound just as good as the slightly larger ones. I'm not sure if it is worth the trouble. The best thing to do is to go and listen to what you can get / afford and make up your mind that way.

In a W123 you can probably improve most audio systems by replacing the door seals and stop hurricane Betty (or whatever) whistling its way through!
