there should be a connector on the side of the compressor, make sure you are getting power when the switch is on or jumper it to start ( be careful of your fingers) At that age you don't have many options , if the compressor fires up you can see if you have a charge, my suspicion is bad seals, hole in lines ect. If you are not familiar with AC systems I would get an expert to look. Plus it is probably R12 and that will need to retrofit to the new stuff . A big job all in all
