The Sony in the W123 is dead, now what?

I have an old Sony CD receiver in my W123. The CD player does not work. I do not have any experience replacing an audio system, but I have to belive I would be more careful than the folks at Best Buy.

Is it possible to hook up the unit and bypass the fader control on the console? I's in use right now, but I understand it limits the output of the system.

Looks like I have the factory speakers and would just as soon leave them for now. Do the mercedes speakers each have a ground wire or are they just grounded to the frame? I wonder if I should pull new wires...

Do I need to pull the console out or maybe just the wood to make this all happen?

Am I crazy for trying it?

Do the folks at Cruthfield know anything special that I should take advantage of?

Thanks much!
