Diesels take A LOT of energy to start, their starters are much more heavy duty than a gas car due to compression of the diesel engine.

If you suspect the battery is low/bad, start there. Take the battery to a place that can load test it. You have to have a battery that will crank it up to get enough compression to fire-off the fuel.
