Impreza (or Outback) wagons hold their value well, have permanent symmetrical AWD, is a Japanese car, is fuel efficient, reliable and relatively cheap to maintain. They have sufficient room for hauling anything, have a cult following, tons of accessories if you veer that route. Lots of enthusiast support too.

It seems like letting go of some cars and simplifying your fleet to one (or two) solid, reliable cars that meet the requirements of your new environment, is the way to go.
